I can't believe it is September already! Only 3 weeks left until track out! There is SO much left to do this quarter!
Thanks to Aimee Mikula for planning our fall learning experience. Plans right now are to make scarecrows and display them in either the carpool or bus loop. The learning experience will take place on Thursday, September 26th at 2:00. She will be sending out an E-vite or Sign Up Genius soon so you can volunteer to come in and help out. Sounds like it is going to be LOTS of fun!
Cranks for Cancer will be taking place next weekend. Fliers have gone home in Tuesday folders with the exact location and time. If I get any more information this week, I will be sure to pass it along.
Barnes and Noble Family Fun Night is September 24th from 6pm to 8pm. Many teachers will be reading their favorite books throughout the night, including 5th grade's very own Mrs. Nussbaum! I believe chorus will also be performing. Expect to see more information about this in the next couple of weeks.
Case 21 Quarter 1 testing is right around the corner! Beginning Monday, September 23rd, we will be testing for 3 days. This year students will be taking the typical reading and math tests as well as science tests for Case 21. Results will be shared at Fall Conferences.
Fall Conference sign up will be coming out next week. Expect to see a Sign Up Genius invitation in your e-mail early next week. I am planning on having conferences on Wednesday, October 16 and Thursday, October 17. Other dates can be arranged when the sign-up is published.
In Tuesday folders this week there will be a number of graded papers. Many students have done a good job of returning these papers. It is very important that I get back ALL graded papers, this includes anything that has a 1, 2, 3, or 4 on it. I have to put together a portfolio for each student to send on to their middle school. If these papers don't come back, then they won't have any papers in their portfolios to show their teachers what kind of work they did in elementary school. If there is a "P" on the paper, that means it was just for practice, I do not need these papers back, you can keep them or recycle them.
There were about 5 students at the morning math review this last Friday. Don't forget, if your child feels that they need some extra help with math, I am available on Friday mornings from 8:15-8:45. Mrs. Lefeld has math review on Tuesday mornings as well if you are not available on Fridays.
We finished up math unit 3 on Powers of 10 this week and are moving in to rounding decimals. This should be a short unit as well since the kids have all rounded decimals before. We will then move in to adding and subtracting decimals at the end of the week.
In reading we began discussing character relationships last week. We will continue this discussion this week. The emphasis in these discussions is always proving the thinking by quoting the text.
We finished up our personal narratives last week as well. There are a few students who still have some work to do to finish them up, but they are very close to finishing. We will begin writing another narrative this week focusing on fiction writing and adding dialogue to the story.
We are continuing our study of weather in science and will be throwing in some social studies this week as well.
I think that about covers it for this week. As always, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.
Have a great week!
