I hope everyone has a great weekend! It is hard to believe that we are reaching the halfway point of the first quarter already! This year is going to fly by! There are just a couple of things to let you know about this week.
First, I will be out on Wednesday and Thursday this week. I will have access to email on Wednesday if you need anything from me, but on Thursday I will not be available at all.
A couple of students came in on Friday morning for some math help. I totally forgot to put that in last week's blog post. I will be doing Friday morning math reviews and Ms. Lefeld will be doing a similar review on Tuesdays. You do not have to let either one of us know that your child is coming in. We will start at 8:15 and have a 30 minute review session before school. This Friday I will not be having my review session, just in case I have to take one more day off, and will begin again next week.
This being the halfway point for the quarter means interim reports will be coming home on Tuesday. The new online gradebook system has not been totally configured yet, so this interim report will look different from what should be coming home next quarter.
This week in math we are continuing to study decimal place value. We should be having our unit test on Thursday and begin a short study of Powers of 10 on Friday.
In reading we are continuing to work on quoting a text to support our thinking. We are also going to begin to look at how we treat new words as we read. Do we read right through them? Do we think about what they mean based on the story? We are also going to focus on those new words and some strategies to help focus on them and make sure we understand them.
In writing we are continuing to work on Personal Narratives. This week our focus is going to be on finishing the draft and revising, individually and with a partner.
In science we are continuing our study of weather. To begin the week we are going to look at how the sun hits the Earth and what that means for temperatures as the light moves further from the equator. In order to complete this experiment I asked the students to bring in flashlights for class on Monday. We want regular flashlights, not the tiny ones you might keep on a key ring or the really big ones that would light the whole room. We will then be talking about the reason for the seasons.
We will be doing some social studies soon, we just need to get a big chunk of the science done first. Our focus this quarter will be on economics.
I think that is it for now. I hope everyone has a great week!
