I want to start by welcoming everyone to 5th grade! We are already halfway through the 3rd week of school, things are looking really good so far. I think this is going to be an exciting year. The kids have been working really hard and have done a great job of following directions and sticking to the tasks assigned.
Last night was Open House. Thanks to everyone who was able to attend, hopefully you didn't have to swim to get to your cars after it rained so hard during our meeting. If you weren't available, I will be posting the presentation so you can take a look at it. If you have any questions, please let me know and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
One of the important things we covered last night was Tuesday Folders. As graded work comes home, please take some time to review it and then make sure it comes back to school. I have to put together a portfolio of work samples at the end of the school year to send on to middle school. On one of the last days of the year, the kids will go through all of their papers to choose their best work for this portfolio according to what the middle schools ask for. Without these papers, we won't be able to send anything on to middle school.

It was also brought to my attention last night that some of the accordion files are rather cumbersome to take home each night since that is what we are using as homework folders at the moment. It would be great if you could pick up a sturdy folder that could be used as a homework folder so the accordions do not need to be transported back and forth.
I was also asked last night if I could post some things that we could use for the classroom. I have been researching books for literature circles and started a wish list. Right now there are quite a few books on the list along with a couple of other supplies. I will continue to add to the list as I think of them.
In math class we are working on multiplying and dividing by 2-digit numbers. Our strategies are quite a bit different from what you and I learned in school, so please check out the math section of the website under quarter 1 for details on how we are solving these problems.
In reading we are working on identifying new or interesting words and using context clues to help define them. We are also working on inferencing and will begin to talk about theme later this week.
We began our science unit with Ms. Nelson this week. Please send in 3-4 clear 2-liter soda bottles for terrariums and aquariums. Please rinse them out before sending them in as small amounts of soda left in the bottles can attract insects as it dries.
