That's right, we are off to a great start! I can't believe 2 weeks have gone by already! It won't be long before we are sending them all off to middle school! I hope everyone has come home each day with great things to say. I'm really looking forward to a great year!
We have a lot going on this year and the kids will be very busy! We are already more than half way through our first math unit, multiplication and division, and will be completing that unit next week. The unit test will most likely be on Friday. In reading we have been discussing checking for understanding and visualizations. Next week the kids will get their blog information and they will have their first Reader's Response blog entry to do. These blog entries will be due weekly and can be done at any time during the week. More information will be coming out about those on Monday. In science we have begun to study weather. If anyone has some expertise in this area and would like to come in and share, I'd be happy to have you. Social Studies will be focusing on Economics this quarter, but we won't be getting to that until the science unit is over.
I don't know how many of the kids came home and showed you my website and if they did, how much you have looked through. I try to post as many things digitally on this website as I can. Every day I post the math notes from class so you can review with your child what we did that day. I also post all the math homework assignments. The math tab is organized by quarter and the things we do this quarter will be there all year, this way if something comes up later you can reference older lessons if needed. The calendar tab is a very important tab to check every once in a while. It is found under the HOME tab. I try to keep an updated Google calendar for the class. This allows you to see what we are doing during the day and what other events might be taking place for you to add to your calendar at home. For instance, next week we are having Open House. It is on Tuesday at 6:30. Ms. Shipley will be holding 2 sessions before Open House begins, one about 3rd Grade Explorers and one about AIG. These types of events will always be on the Calendar tab. I also list the homework on this website every day. If your child forgets to bring home their assignment notebook, you can find the list of what needs to be done here. As more things are added to this site, I will let you know what it is and where to find it, like field trip forms or study materials for EOG's.
Speaking of EOG's, if your calendar goes into June of 2014, we have some tentative dates for you already. It is still very early in the year, so it is possible for these dates to change. At the moment, we are scheduled to take EOG's on June 10, 11, & 12. These dates are very important and we need to make sure everyone is here. It is always best for students to test when the rest of their peers test and not be singled out to take the test in a separate room on a different day.
Thanks to everyone for getting their information sheets turned back in so quickly! The only thing that was missing was a volunteer for room parent. Without someone in this position it is hard to schedule celebrations and get other events organized. There should be a room parent meeting coming up in the next couple of weeks. If someone would like to take on this responsibility, please let me know. Those of you who signed up to stuff Tuesday Folders should see a SignUpGenius invitation this weekend to sign up for Tuesday Folders for the rest of the quarter.
I think that about covers it for now. I will send out updates just like this each week, typically on Sundays or Mondays to let you know what we will be doing in class that week. Hope to see everyone at Open House!
